Candidates for Somerville Municipal Elections

The Progressive Democrats of Somerville is pleased to announce that it has endorsed nine candidates for the Somerville Board of Aldermen and the Somerville School Committee.  For the Somerville Board of Aldermen, PDS has endorsed Marty Martinez and Denise Provost for Aldermen-At-Large, Lawrence Paolella for Ward 3 Alderman, Walter Pero for Ward 4 Alderman, and Rebekah Gewirtz for Ward 6 Alderman.  For the Somerville School Committee, PDS has endorsed Roberta Bauer for Ward 3, Mark Niedergang for Ward 5, Paul Bockelman for Ward 6, and Herby Duverne for Ward 7.
 
Seventeen of the twenty-nine candidates seeking elected office in Somerville sought the endorsement of PDS and answered questionnaires about many issues facing the city.  Fifteen of those attended the July 11 PDS municipal endorsement forum, each delivering a short speech and answering questions.  The candidates' responses to the endorsement questionnaire are posted on the web at www.PDSomerville.org.
 
PDS's candidate forums are part of its ongoing commitment to defending the principles of the Democratic Party Platform and involving grassroots activists in the democratic process.  PDS has played a distinctive role in Somerville elections.  According to Alderman-At-Large Denise Provost, "Somerville has no League of Women Voters, and no other civic associations to hold debates or candidate forums.  PDS has been a force for political accountability in this city, and I'm delighted to have its endorsement."
 
Alderman Walter Pero said of the occasion, "I am very pleased to have the PDS endorsement.  I think the process was a very thoughtful and thorough one that PDS went through.  I look forward to working with PDS toward a successful re-election in ward 4."
 
PDS's record of accomplishments also includes the passage of the Platform Accountability Amendment to the State Democratic Platform, the implementation of the Mass Scorecard, and numerous other community forums for candidates seeking elected office.
