As a kid, September always brought feelings of trepidation. It wasn’t just the beginning of brutal football practices, although that leaps first to mind (two-a-days and gassers!). Nor was it just losing summer’s freedom. My summers as a kid consisted of endless days of playing with friends and working at the corner deli for a warm, unassuming guy who tutored me as much in his goofy humor as in how to provide quality service. It was the freedom of play and the sense of belonging at the deli - knowing why I was there - that I found hard to trade for the strictures of school. Read more...

What’s the first question people want to know about Paul Bockelman? Easy: Is he really that nice? I mean, come on. He’s smart, he’s funny—very funny-- he’s social, he does more than half the work around the house, he totally respects women, truly likes people, remembers with some real precision what it was like to be a kid and how to make kids happy, and carries around with him a sense of enjoyment about the world. But you know what? He was born in Ohio, and I think they might grow ‘em a little nicer out there; or at least the ones who escape to come east, which he did 32 years ago, the first day we met. Bockelman Announces Run for Ward 6 School Seat
You know, one thing I have really liked about being a parent. No, it’s not having a built in excuse to go to the ice cream store. It’s how much I’ve been able to get involved in their school.
